Generic Dextroamphetamine: An Overview
Dextroamphetamine sulfate (
Dexedrine®) is a prescription medication that is used for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (
ADHD). It is also used to treat
narcolepsy. Dextroamphetamine comes in two forms: tablets and extended release capsules. Dextroamphetamine extended release capsules are specially designed to release the medications slowly over time. Because extended release capsules release the medication slowly over time, they can be taken just once a day, eliminating the need to take the medication at school or work.
Dextroamphetamine was originally manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and is sold under the name Dexedrine. However, it has since come off patent and is now available as a generic. Interestingly, brand-name Dexedrine tablets are also made by another maker (Shire Richwood Inc.) under a different name: Dextrostat® tablets. Dextrostat tablets are equivalent to Dexedrine tablets.
Generic dextroamphetamine is sold under the names Dextroamphetamine Sulfate tablets and Dextroamphetamine Sulfate Extended Release capsules.
