The amphetamine and dextroamphetamine dosing guidelines that your healthcare provider will follow vary depending on several factors, such as your age and other medications you are currently taking. The dosage of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine for adults with narcolepsy is usually 5 mg to 60 mg per day. For those with ADHD, the dose should not be more than 40 mg per day total.
An Overview of Amphetamine and Dextroamphetamine Dosage InformationThe dose of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine (Adderall®) prescribed by your healthcare provider will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age
- Other narcolepsy or ADHD medications you may have tried
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you may be currently taking.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Amphetamine and Dextroamphetamine Dosage for ADHDFor children age three to five, amphetamine and dextroamphetamine should be started at 2.5 mg daily. This dose may be increased by 2.5 mg daily every week if needed.
For children age six and older, amphetamine and dextroamphetamine should be started at 5 mg once or twice a day. The dose may be increased by 5 mg every week if needed. In general, the dosage of this drug should not be more than 40 mg per day total. The first dose of the day should be taken first thing in the morning. If taking amphetamine and dextroamphetamine two or three times a day, the next doses should be given after four to six hours.
