Sleep Home > Generic Zaleplon

Currently, there are two strengths of generic zaleplon available -- 5 mg and 10 mg. The FDA has assigned the generic versions an "AB" rating, which means that they should be equivalent to brand-name Sonata. Generic zaleplon is made by several companies, including Teva Pharmaceuticals, Sandoz, and Upsher-Smith Laboratories.

An Overview of Generic Zaleplon

Zaleplon (Sonata®) is a prescription sleep medication that has been licensed to treat insomnia.
Brand-name zaleplon (sold under the name Sonata) is manufactured by King Pharmaceuticals, Inc. However, the patent for Sonata has expired, and the medication is now available in generic form.

Who Makes Generic Sonata?

Generic zaleplon is currently made by the following manufacturers:
  • Roxane Laboratories, Inc.
  • Genpharm, L.P.
  • Teva Pharmaceuticals
  • Sandoz
  • Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Inc.

  • Unichem, Inc.

Is Generic Zaleplon as Good as Sonata?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns each generic a rating. An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic zaleplon versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Sonata.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers or dyes or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
