The Family Connection in People With Narcolepsy
There is strong evidence that
narcolepsy may run in families. About 8 percent to 12 percent of people with narcolepsy have a close relative with the disease.
Other factors -- such as infection, immune system dysfunction, trauma, hormonal changes, and stress -- may also be present before narcolepsy develops. Thus, while close relatives of people with narcolepsy have a statistically higher risk of developing narcolepsy than do members of the general population, that risk remains low in comparison to diseases that are purely genetic in origin.
