Nuvigil and Breastfeeding

Women who are nursing are typically advised to use caution while taking Nuvigil. Breastfeeding could potentially pass the medication through breast milk to the nursing infant. Even if your healthcare provider believes that Nuvigil and breastfeeding is a safe combination in your particular situation, you should still watch for any side effects or changes in your infant.

Is Nuvigil Safe During Breastfeeding?

At this time, it is not known if Nuvigil™ (armodafinil) passes through breast milk in women. Because of the potentially serious side effects that could occur in the nursing infant, the manufacturer recommends that the drug be used with caution in breastfeeding mothers. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding and have been prescribed Nuvigil, make sure to let your healthcare provider know.

Nuvigil and Breastfeeding: What Does the Research Say?

No studies have been conducted on whether Nuvigil passes through breast milk. However, based on the chemical characteristics of the drug, it is likely that it will pass through breast milk in humans. If your healthcare provider decides that it is okay for you to take Nuvigil while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects or changes in your infant. Because the drug stays in the body for a relatively long time, it probably does not help to breastfeed and take Nuvigil at different times of the day (as is sometimes recommended with other medications).

In general, very little is known about most drugs in breastfeeding, since it is usually considered unethical to study medications in breastfeeding women. Although this lack of information can be frustrating, it is important to understand that this is done to protect babies, who cannot protect themselves.
