Can I Combine ProSom and Alcohol?
ProSom® (
estazolam) is a prescription sleep medication. Both alcohol and ProSom are central nervous system depressants (CNS depressants), which means they can both slow down the activity of the brain. Because drinking alcohol while you are taking ProSom may increase your risk of serious reactions and side effects, it is not recommended that you combine the two.
You may also be more sensitive to the effects of alcohol if you are taking ProSom. For example, you may not be able to safely drink as much alcohol as you have been used to drinking in the past.
Side Effects of ProSom and Alcohol
Drinking alcohol while taking ProSom may increase your risk of certain
ProSom side effects, such as:
- Memory problems
- Drowsiness
- Problems with coordination
- Unusual behavior
- Dizziness.
Combining the two may also slow down both heart and breathing rates, which can cause you to pass out, have difficulty breathing, or even lead to death.
Talking With Your Healthcare Provider About ProSom and Alcohol
Although it is not recommended that you drink alcohol while taking ProSom, you should not be afraid to discuss your alcohol consumption with your healthcare provider. Together, the two of you can make a shared decision about ProSom and alcohol that is right for you. If you do drink, your healthcare provider can also suggest ways to help you stop.
