Drug Interactions With Ramelteon

It is possible for drug interactions with ramelteon to occur if the sleep medicine is taken together with alcohol, ketoconazole, or fluvoxamine, among other drugs. These interactions can increase the levels of ramelteon in your blood, which can also increase the risk of developing side effects.

 

Ramelteon Drug Interactions: An Overview

Ramelteon (Rozerem®) can potentially interact with many drugs. Some of the medicines that may lead to drug interactions with ramelteon include:
 
  • Alcohol
  • Fluconazole (Diflucan®)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
  • Fluvoxamine (Luvox®)
  • Rifampin (Rifadin®).
     

Ramelteon Interactions Explained

 
Alcohol
When alcohol and ramelteon are taken at the same time, ramelteon may increase the effects of the alcohol. It is, therefore, recommended that you do not drink alcohol when taking ramelteon.
 
Fluconazole (Diflucan)
Taking ramelteon with fluconazole can increase the level of ramelteon in the blood, increasing your chance of developing side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these two medications together.
 
Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
Taking ramelteon with ketoconazole can increase the level of ramelteon in the blood, increasing your chance of developing side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these two medications together.
 
Fluvoxamine (Luvox)
Taking ramelteon with fluvoxamine can cause extremely high levels of ramelteon in the blood, increasing your risk of side effects. Do not take these two medications together.
