What Is Zolpidem Oral Spray Used For?

Zolpidem oral spray is a medication that is used for the short-term treatment of insomnia in people who have difficulty falling asleep (as opposed to those who have trouble staying asleep). Healthcare providers may also occasionally recommend off-label uses for this medication, such as for treating long-term insomnia. There are currently no uses of zolpidem oral spray approved for children or adolescents.

Zolpidem Oral Spray Uses

Zolpidem oral spray (Zolpimist®) is a prescription medication approved to help people with insomnia fall asleep. It is not approved for other kinds of insomnia, such as trouble staying asleep. In studies, zolpidem oral spray has been shown to decrease the time it takes to fall asleep for up to 35 days of use; it is not clear whether this medication would be effective for longer use.

What Is Insomnia?

It is not unusual to have trouble sleeping from time to time. However, if you feel that you do not get enough sleep or cannot obtain satisfying sleep, you could possibly have a sleep disorder called insomnia. Insomnia symptoms include:
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Waking up often during the night and having trouble going back to sleep
  • Waking up too early in the morning
  • Non-refreshing sleep.
There are several types of insomnia. Insomnia types are often based on how long the insomnia lasts and how often it occurs. These types include:
  • Acute insomnia (short-term)
  • Transient insomnia (comes and goes)
  • Chronic insomnia.
Short-term insomnia can last from one night to a few weeks. It is often caused by emotional or physical discomfort, and can be related to a single specific event. Insomnia can also be categorized by the specific sleep symptoms that occur (such as difficulty falling asleep versus difficulty staying asleep). Zolpidem oral spray is fast-acting and is, therefore, approved only to treat insomnia that is characterized by difficulty falling asleep.
